New vino dialog

Today I released Vino 2.25.5, which features a new configuration dialog and the UPnP support:

vino1
vino2

Yes, I dropped some ‘advanced’ stuff, they remain in GConf.

PHP and Oracle on Ubuntu Server

Here are a few steps to have your PHP with Oracle (OCI8) support. I assume you already have Apache and PHP running. I have tested this procedure with Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy, LTS) Server Edition.

Install some needed packages:

sudo apt-get install php-pear php5-dev libaio1 build-essential

Download the Oracle Instant Client:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/htdocs/linuxsoft.html

You need the packages:

  • Basic client
  • SDK
  • SQL Plus (Optional)

Unzip all downloaded files in /opt/instantclient

Run the commands below:

cd /opt/instantclient
sudo ln -s libclntsh.so.11.1 libclntsh.so
sudo ln -s libocci.so.11.1 libocci.so
sudo sh -c ‘echo “/opt/instantclient” > /etc/ld.so.conf.d/oracle.conf’
sudo ldconfig

Let’s install OCI8 module:

sudo pecl install oci8

When asked for Oracle PATH, type:

all <ENTER>
instantclient,/opt/instantclient <ENTER>
<ENTER>

Put the newly created extension in PHP config:

sudo sh -c ‘echo “extension=oci8.so” > /etc/php5/conf.d/oracle.ini’

Restart your apache:

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Check with phpinfo() if OCI8 module was loaded.

That’s All!

Latinoware and GNOME Forum

It’s over… what a pity. It was one of the best events I’ve ever attended. This time was special: I took my wife with me! We enjoyed it a lot!

Wednesday – 29 Oct

We arrived in Foz do Iguaçu in the morning, and went directly to Paraguay. We didn’t even got out of the bus, due to a strong rain. Went back to hotel. Met Fábio (GNOME translator) and gave a walk through the city. At night, after an endless waiting, we got dinner, sponsored by Latinoware. Fish food, very good:

Everybody was hungry

Thursday – 30 Oct

First day of the event, get the credentials, get the booth ready, meet the friends, this stuff. At night we had a opening drink, and a “light show”, in the Itaipu. The dinner was pizza:

Friday – 31 Oct

Friday was free for most of us. In the morning, we went to Paraguay, make some shopping. Crazy place, lots, lots of people. After lunch, time to visit the wonderful Iguassu Falls: Just amazing, incredible miracle of the nature!

Better day, after all it’s the GNOME Forum Day. We had talks from 10 am to 7 pm! Pictures and details about our Forum can be found at http://br.gnome.org/GNOMEBR/VForum (pt-BR). In the end of the day we had our last dinner :( .

Final considerations

I would like to thank the GNOME Foundation and Latinoware for making this happen. It really rocks. It was really wonderful to meet old and new friends.

Of course, I must thank Izabel Valverde, who – one more time – organized our Forum. Izabel, thank you very much!

Vino – testing the connectivity

Hi, folks. For those of you who don’t know: Vino is the VNC server that comes with GNOME. Its purpose is to allow you sharing the computer with other people, often to get remote support. You can enable it by clicking System->Preferences->Remote Desktop.

Currently, this applet shows the local name/IP of the machine and allows you to send this address to someone by email.

Wondering how to make things easier to people who wants support, I’ve made some changes in this dialog, by offering a button to let the user to know his real IP address as well his reachability.

Screenshots of this new feature:

Picture 1: Now we show a message ‘service is not running’ when the server is off.

Picture 2: Once the service is started, we show the local IP/name. There’s a button to get the real IP from the internet.

Picture 3: Clicking on the button brings up the real IP and the status of this machine: In this scenario, the machine is behind a firewall and it’s not reachable. We supply a few information about this.

Picture 4: In this scenario, the machine is open to the internet, and can be reached.

The code is still in my machine, I would like to hear comments, suggestions about this feature. Currently I’m using an external webservice to get the real IP and to test the reachability.

Of course, this change doesn’t fix all our problems, but I believe it helps the user, by giving him more information about his conectivity. Another feature I would love to implement is reverse connection, which will help even more the users behind a firewall.

So, go comment please!

5º GNOME Forum

Hi, folks!

It’s time to another GNOME Forum here in Brazil! In its fifth edition, this time it will take place together with Latinoware, the Latino American Free Software Conference.

The city, Foz do Iguaçu, which hosts Latinoware, is a strong touristic place here in Brazil, due to its wonderfull falls. This is a great oportunity to have fun with GNOME, again!

The Forum is hosting also the first GNOME Latin American Tour! So we will have some cool GNOME people, like Diego, Germán and Pedro.

I am sure the Forum will rock! I will post pictures during and after the event. It will happen in 30, 31 October and 1st November.

See you!

Children day

Couldn’t wait until Sunday :-) (Which we celebrate the children day here in Brazil)

Want to try GNOME 2.24?

Thanks to Ken VanDine, you can try the fresh new GNOME in an easy and painless way: through a virtual machine!

There are images for VMWare and QEMU/KVM/Parallels. All you have to do is to download the image and run it in a virtualized environment.

To download the image: http://torrent.gnome.org/
If you find out some bug and want to see it fixed in 2.24.1, let us know.

Affter that, if you don’t like or don’t want to install GNOME by compiling it, just wait for a distribution near to you. Ubuntu Intrepid, for example, will be released in the end of October, featuring GNOME 2.24.

GNOME 2.24 released!

Celebrating one more GNOME release!

After 6 months of hard work from developers, translators, testers, the 2.24 version was released – exactly in time – today, September 24th. This version is full of improvements and new applications. See on Release Notes full news of this release.

GNOME in the Debian Festival at Alagoas

It is going to happen today and tomorrow, here in Maceió, Alagoas, the 3º Debian Festival, an event which already belongs to our Free Software annual calendar.

This year I will be talking about the GNOME project, spreading it and inviting all people to become active in the community.

More information in the event website (pt_BR): http://enec.org.br/debianfestival

I will put some photos later here!

See ya!

GNOME and Ubuntu in Ceará, Brazil

Hello! Great news:

Soon, from 20 to 24th August, I will be in Fortaleza, Brazil attending Congresso Estadual de Software Livre (CESoL-CE). In English: Free Software Regional Conference.

I will give two talks, one about GNOME and the other one about Ubuntu, where I will be showing how the communities work, and how things work on both projects.

Besides that I will be giving a workshop about development on GNOME: modules structures, bugzilla, svn, patches, glades and so on. All this in 4 hours and each person will have a computer to practice on-line!

Ah, there will be even a free software development festival, where we will have an area full of computers and volunteers can join us and work on GNOME bugs, as well as some other free software projects, like Debian. There will be – for each project – a mentor available to guide everybody interested in contributing.

I’m sure it will be a great event, thanks to the hard work of organizers! I’ll post photos and news as soon as I get them!

See you!
