Ufa!

Olá, pessoal.

Nos últimos dias, os sites do Ubuntu Brasil (site, planeta, wiki) estiveram fora do ar. Isso foi devido a uma mudança que fizemos para a infra-estrutura da Canonical. O servidor antigo já não estava dando conta do recado e frequentemente travava, parava de responder.

Com esta mudança esperamos não passar mais por estes problemas, uma vez que agora a Canonical é responsável pelo servidor.

Hoje voltamos os serviços web e wiki. Espero para semana que vem o planeta voltar.

Pedimos desculpas pelo incoveniente, estamos fazendo o nosso melhor, dentro das nossas possibilidades para termos tudo 100% de novo. Saliento que algumas coisas não dependem de nós, e sim da Canonical, portanto vamos exercitar um pouco mais da virtude chamada paciência.

Por favor, testem o site (http://www.ubuntu-br.org) e o wiki (http://wiki.ubuntu-br.org) e qualquer defeito, mandei um email ou para mim ou para a lista de discussão Ubuntu-BR.

Espero em breve complementar este esclarecimento com uma entrevista feita com o Licio, nosso sysadmin.

It is going to happen today and tomorrow, here in Maceió, Alagoas, the 3º Debian Festival, an event which already belongs to our Free Software annual calendar.

This year I will be talking about the GNOME project, spreading it and inviting all people to become active in the community.

Hello! Great news:

Soon, from 20 to 24th August, I will be in Fortaleza, Brazil attending Congresso Estadual de Software Livre (CESoL-CE). In English: Free Software Regional Conference.

I will give two talks, one about GNOME and the other one about Ubuntu, where I will be showing how the communities work, and how things work on both projects.

Besides that I will be giving a workshop about development on GNOME: modules structures, bugzilla, svn, patches, glades and so on. All this in 4 hours and each person will have a computer to practice on-line!

Ah, there will be even a free software development festival, where we will have an area full of computers and volunteers can join us and work on GNOME bugs, as well as some other free software projects, like Debian. There will be - for each project - a mentor available to guide everybody interested in contributing.

I’m sure it will be a great event, thanks to the hard work of organizers! I’ll post photos and news as soon as I get them!

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the time to blog about GUADEC and Istanbul as I would like. Here is a brief random list on what has been happening so far:

• GUADEC is really an amazing event. Lots of hackers around, all fall in love with GNOME!
• Istanbul is a great, really great place to visit. I wish I had one more week here. Someday I’ll bring my wife here.
• My hotel is located at the best place of the city. I can go to the museums and mosques by walking. Great!
• Bosphorus: Great just like I’ve heard about. We had a boat trip yesterday, with all GUADEC people. Just amazing. Isbanbul is even more beautiful at night!
• There are too many smokers on the city.
• There are too many cats on the city.
• I look like a turkish. Many people said me that.
• Our soccer team (black one) was the champion on the FreeFA soccer tournement. With a brazilian forward, what else would you expect?

Some news in Vinagre since 0.5 version (GNOME 2.22):

• Basic support for scaling, based on OpenGL
• Side panel shows both bookmarked connections and avahi-discovered machines
• New command-line option to debug the connection: –gtk-vnc-debug
• View-only mode
• Send CTRL-ALT-DEL option
• Unique instance behaviour with a command-line option (–new-window) to open another window
• Don’t show tabs if there is only one connection active
• Support for host::port command-line syntax
• Connect dialog now remembers previous host/port address
• New toolbar in fullscreen mode. It appears when you move the mouse to the top of the window
• Panel applet, with quick access to bookmarks and avahi-discovered machines
• Better compatibility with more VNC servers

Latest Vinagre is 2.23.4 and can be found at GNOME FTP servers.

In other news, I’m ready to GUADEC (or almost ready, still have to draw my presentation).
I’m looking forward to meet all GNOME crowd.

Next Friday I’m going to São Paulo, just for the weekend, enjoy some cold days, thanks to GOL, an Brazilian airline which is offering tickets for about US$ 5.00 (JFYI, Maceió, where I live-São Paulo is distance of 2500Km)!!! Unbelievable!

GUADEC - GNOME Users and Developers European Conference - é o maior evento GNOME do mundo, acontece anualmente em alguma cidade da Europa, e reúne a maior quantidade possível de desenvolvedores e usuários. Este ano será em Instanbul, Turquia, a partir de 7 de julho.

Minha palestra está agendada para sexta, 11 de julho, e irei compartilhar minha experiência como novo colaborador do projeto, esperando assim quebrar a barreira [imaginária] entre o GNOME e potenciais novos colaboradores.

Começa hoje, 28 de abril - e vai até o dia 3 de maio - mais um Ubuntu Open Week, uma série de aulas on-line, via IRC, para quem quer iniciar suas contribuições ao Ubuntu.

São muitos tópicos a sua escolha, como empacotamentos, triagem de bugs, Ubuntu Mobile, etc.

O único pre-requisito é saber inglês, pois todas as aulas (e, todas as [suas futuras] contribuições ao Ubuntu) são em inglês.

Pegando carona no artigo do Og, vou deixar aqui um tutorial que sempre recomendo pra quem quer começar a programar para Linux, independente da linguagem de programação.

Ele foi escrito pelo Marcelo Lira, e explica como usar o Glade para desenhar as telas, e como manipular estas telas em várias linguagens (Python, C, Java, etc).
